FAIR SHAKE OF THE SAUCE BOTTLE

Consumer interest in sauces, dressings and condiments in Oz is growing, with 2008 sales clocking $1.8 billion, according to market research group Datamonitor.

The trend seems to have been encouraged by an increase in at-home consumption – including an interest in making traditional and authentic multi-cuisine meals – and a desire for tastier healthy meals, created through adding things like seasoning and low-fat sauces.

More than half of the total sales in the category were made up of wet cooking sauces and seasonings, according to the report, Sauces, Dressings and Condiments in Australia to 2013.

Table sauces, dressings and pickled products made up about one third, while condiments and dips formed the remainder.

Ketchup and barbecue sauce continued to be favored by Aussie customers for the table.

There was also a rise in gluten-free products in the category, catering to those who suffer from coeliac disease or prefer a gluten-free diet.

Datamonitor predicts the total sauces, dressings and condiments market to reach the value of more than $2.1 billion by 2013.
